The Republic of Moldova ranked 64th out of 132 countries and economies in the Global Innovation Index 2021 (GII) ranking, accumulating a total of 32.3 points out of 100 possible.

According to the ranking, in 2021, in the sub-index of innovation inputs, our country ranked 80th, and in the sub-index of outputs, it ranked 54th. In terms of infrastructure, it ranked 82nd, human capital and research – 77th, market sophistication - 74th place, business sophistication - 87th place, and institutions - 81st. It registered a better ranking for creative outputs - 53rd and knowledge and technology outputs indicator - 54th. It should be mentioned that the Republic of Moldova ranked 6th globally among the lower middle-income countries.

According to the current edition of the Global Innovation Index launched on September 20, Switzerland leads the ranking, maintaining its top position since 2011. It is followed by Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Korea.

Ukraine ranks 49th, while Romania ranks 48th.

The Global Innovation Index is one of the most important reference studies for measuring the innovation-based performance of countries. The study includes 132 countries around the world and examines 81 indicators including: human and research capital, infrastructure, loans, investments, interconnections, innovation, creative activity outputs, etc. The current edition also focuses on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on innovation.

The Global Innovation Index is a unique tool to guide policy-makers and businesses in charting plans to ensure that we emerge stronger from the pandemic,” said WIPO Director General Daren Tang.

The Global Index ranking has been published annually since 2007 and is conducted by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Cornell University in the United States, and the French Insead School of Management. The purpose of this report is to familiarize the public with developments in the innovation sector and to address this area beyond traditional innovation mechanisms, reflecting in the light of research and development indicators the situation at global, regional and national level.
