The Republic of Moldova drops 68th in the rankings of the Global Innovation Index 2024

The Republic of Moldova ranked 68th out of 133 countries and economies in the ranking of the Global Innovation Index 2024 (GII), marking a drop of 8 positions compared to the previous year, when it ranked 60th.

The Global Innovation Index is one of the most important benchmark studies for measuring countries’ innovation performance. The study includes 133 countries worldwide and examines around 80 indicators, including: Human capital and research, Infrastructure, Credit, Investment, Interconnections, Innovation, Creative outputs, etc.

In the 2024 rankings, the Republic of Moldova ranked 80th in the Innovation Input Sub-Index (81st in 2023) and 57th in the Innovation Output Sub-Index (50th in 2023). In terms of Infrastructure, the country ranked 89th (75th in the previous year), and in Human capital and research, 68th (67th in 2023).

In the field of creativity, the Republic of Moldova ranked 51st (compared to the 42nd rank in 2023). On the Knowledge and technology outputs indicator, the country ranked 64th (60th in 2023). In terms of Business sophistication, the Republic of Moldova ranked 105th. Also, in the category of Institutions, the country ranked 90th, compared to the 96th rank of the previous year. However, on the Market sophistication indicator, the Republic of Moldova ranked 63rd (76th in 2023), reflecting a potential for development in this field.

The highest rank by the Republic of Moldova in this rankings was in 2011, when it ranked 39th. This assessment reflects the country’s commitment to promoting innovation and provides an insight into the progress made in this field over time.

The current edition of the Global Innovation Index was launched on 26 September 2024, with Switzerland taking the top position, which it has held since 2011, followed by Sweden, the United States of America, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

Among the neighboring countries, Romania ranks 48th, and Ukraine ranks 60th.

The ranking is made annually since 2007 by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Cornell University and the INSEAD Business School. Its aim is to highlight developments in the innovation sector, providing an overview of the situation at global, regional and national levels.
