On April 19, 2016, it was held the meeting of the National Commission on Intellectual Property (NCIP), chaired by Deputy Vice Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Minister of Economy, Octavian Calmac.

The meeting was attended by the representatives of public administration central specialized authorities, law-enforcement and control bodies, responsible for the protection of intellectual property rights, and representatives of non-profit organizations in the field of intellectual property, members of NCIP, including specialists therefrom.

During the meeting there were discussed current topics of major national importance, focused on strengthening and development of intellectual property protection system.

Special attention was paid to examination and approval of the Consolidated Monitoring Report on the realization of the Action Plan for the years 2015-2017 on implementation of the National Intellectual Property Strategy until 2020 (reporting period 2015), presented by the Director General of the State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI), Octavian Apostol, and examination of the activity of the Observatory on Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights in the context of the National Report on the Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights for 2015.

Also, representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Customs Service and Prosecutor General’s Office presented information on the current situation recorded in the field of enforcement of intellectual property rights in Moldova, and also the progress made in this regard.

A priority for the Commission members was also the approach, in the meeting, to the actions taken by the authorities to develop the system of protection of geographical indications, appellations of origin and traditional specialties guaranteed in the Republic of Moldova, and the progress made in this regard. In this context, Octavian Apostol informed the participants about signing by the Republic of Moldova, on 11 April 2016, of the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications, adopted on May 20, 2015, including about the benefits of signing this act for the Republic of Moldova, stressing the need to strengthen and further develop the system of protection of geographical indications, appellations of origin and traditional specialties guaranteed, fact also stated by the chairman of the National Commission on Intellectual Property, Octavian Calmac.

At the same time, members of the Commission were informed of the recommendations formulated by AGEPI as a result of a study on improving the national legal and regulatory framework in the field of intellectual property in order to encourage innovation activity and take over the best international practices on creating a national innovation Ecosystem, oriented towards economic growth.
