The Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and Georgia in the GI Field, Supported by the Government

22.03.2023

The Government of the Republic of Moldova approved, today, March 22, the Draft Decision of the Government approving the Draft Law for the ratification of the Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and Georgia on Mutual Recognition and Protection of Geographical Indications. It was presented during the Executive meeting by Andrei Popa, Deputy Director General of the State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI).

The topicality of the treaty is determined by the new economic trends registered at the international level, conditioned by the increase in demand for competitive products, designated with geographical indications, whose protection needs to be regulated and ensured at the highest level. The aforesaid Agreement establishes an efficient and secure mechanism for the protection of geographical indications and appellations of origin registered by the signatory parties and provides domestic producers with the necessary legal framework to access new foreign markets.

The Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and Georgia on Mutual Recognition and Protection of Geographical Indications was signed in Tbilisi, Georgia, on February 1, 2023.

The main rights and obligations deriving from the content of the Agreement consist in the mutual recognition and protection of geographical indications and appellations of origin on the territory of the signatory parties.

The application of the provisions of the Agreement in question will encourage trade in products with high added value, originating in the territories of the contracting parties and will provide the opportunity to increase exports of these products. At the same time, the implementation of the Agreement will contribute to the development and strengthening of relations with Georgia.
