Every year, on April 23, is celebrated the World Book and Copyright Day, at the initiative of UNESCO. This day UNESCO aims to promote reading, publishing and protection of rights on intellectual property objects by copyright.

UNESCO has designated the city of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, as the “World Book Capital 2014”, in recognition of quality the program to promote reading, especially among young people and for the significant efforts made to increase the percentage of literacy among population.

World Book and Copyright Day was marked for the first time on 23 April 1996. Starting with this year, almost in all countries of the world are organized book exhibitions, public readings and a series of events designed to encourage and popularize reading.

In Moldova, on this day is also marked the Librarian Day, instituted in recognition of the role the librarians have in the knowledge-based society. Thus, on this occasion are organized, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and National Library, events dedicated to books, writers, publishers, booksellers, librarians, and copyright. Librarians Association of the Republic of Moldova (http://www.abrm.md/) organized, on this occasion, a festive meeting within the premises of Mihai Eminescu National Theater where were awarded diplomas of excellence for librarians from the Ministry of Culture. There also were given diplomas from the Government and other competent ministries, such as the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry and announced the results of the national Contests held by ABRM – “Best Librarian of 2013” and Most Successful Works in Librarianship and Information Science – 2013”.
