WIPO Advisory Committee on New Measures in Combating Counterfeiting and Piracy on the Internet

Activity of the Advisory Committee on Intellectual Property Rights, online dialogue, took place on September 21, within the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Under the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the event took place in hybrid format.

The meeting was attended by representatives of WIPO Member States, as well as delegates from international and national, governmental and non-governmental organizations. The Republic of Moldova was represented at this Committee by Eugeniu Rusu, Director General of the State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI), President of the Intellectual Property (IP) Observatory, Natalia Mogol, Deputy Director General of AGEPI, Ecaterina Popa, Secretary of the IP Observatory and Eliza Botnari, Counsellor of the Director General.

In line with the work agenda, the participants in the WIPO Advisory Committee addressed a number of issues of priority interest, in particular focusing on new measures in combating counterfeiting and piracy on the internet. The representatives of China presented the latest developments in combating these phenomena in the online environment. Participants were also briefed on Germany’s new approach to combating cybercrime, the Philippines’ experience in the field of intellectual property protection in digital commerce, and the Russian Federation’s actions to combat the spread of pirated content on the Internet. Developments in the online application of intellectual property in the European and Baltic States Group were another topic discussed within the framework of the Committee.

Finally, the participants in the Committee highlighted the importance of such meetings, exchanges of experience and discussions on practical aspects related to the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights, as well as raising society’s awareness of the fight against counterfeiting and piracy in the online environment, since enforcement of IP rights is a defining aspect of economic growth, protection of health and safety of citizens.
