Current Situation in the Field of Geographical Indications, Discussed During an AGEPI - CMAC Meeting

The current situation in the field of geographical indications in the Republic of Moldova was discussed during a meeting between the representatives of the State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI) and the Center for Applied Metrology and Certification (CMAC), held on April 1, 2021.

During the meeting, a general presentation of the issue of the official control system provided for in Law No. 66/2008 on the Protection of Geographical Indications, Appellations of Origin and Traditional Specialties Guaranteed (Law No. 66/2008).

Also, the subject related to the legislative and economic constraints regarding control authority recognition mechanisms provided for in Art. 33 and 34 of Law No. 66/2008.

The parties also exchanged views and information on the development prospects of the geographical indications system in the Republic of Moldova, and submitted potential solutions to unblock the existing situation in the field of monitoring compliance with the specifications of agricultural products and foodstuffs, other than wines.

The Director General of CMAC, Dragos Macari, reconfirmed the interest and openness of the institution he leads to contribute to the strengthening of the official control system, in the part related to the verification of the compliance with the specifications.

At the end of the discussions, the Director General of AGEPI, Viorel Iustin, mentioned that the Agency has made and will continue to make sustained efforts to create in our country a strong system of protection and promotion of geographical indications, appellations of origin and traditional specialties guaranteed.

We should mention that, at present, the following Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) and Protected Appellations of Origin (PAO) are registered in the Republic of Moldova: PGI Divin, PGI Stefan Voda, Valul lui Traian and Codru for wines, PGI Zabriceni for dried plants and fruits and the mixtures thereof, PGI Calarasi rose petal jam, PGI Prunes of Lalova, PGI Honey from Codrii Moldovei, PGI Fruit paste of Valea Rautului, PGI Nimoreni apricot brandy, PAO Ciumai for sweet red dessert and natural dry red wine, PAO Romanesti for red wine and PAO Popeasca cheese, PAO Magura cheese, PAO Marinici gooseberry.
