The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is organizing on November 5-6, 2024, the 10th edition of the WIPO Conversations on Intellectual Property and Frontier Technologies.

The main theme of this edition is: “AI Output: To protect, or not to protect – that is the IP Question”.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing creative and innovative industries, influencing economic growth globally. With the rapid advancement of AI, more and more questions arise around the impact of this technology on human creators – Is artificial intelligence a threat or a valuable resource for boosting creativity?

The focus is on copyright protection and the legal implications of using copyrighted works in AI training datasets. A current topic is whether AI-generated output should be protected by copyright, and courts in different countries offer varying approaches to this issue.

The tenth session will provide an open debate framework for stakeholders, including a session dedicated to the exchange of practices between Member States and IP offices on the protection of AI output. The event will take place in a hybrid format, at the WIPO headquarters in Geneva, with live transmission on Zoom. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.
