Every year, on June 6, is marked the World Anti-Counterfeiting Day, being established since 1998, at the initiative of the Global Anti-Counterfeiting Network (GACG), with the aim of raising public awareness of the economic damage that counterfeiting and piracy cause to companies. In recent years, the phenomenon of infringement of intellectual property rights (IP) has grown especially with the evolution of information technologies. These illegal practices cause the loss of hundreds of thousands of skilled jobs worldwide and can often endanger the health of consumers or cause serious damage to the environment.
A number of committees and groups of intellectual property rights (IPR) enforcement organizations have been set up at international level: WIPO Advisory Committee on Enforcement, European Union Observatory on Infringements of IPRs, EUROPOL, International IP Crime Investigators College, etc.
In 2011, on the recommendation of European experts, the State Agency on Intellectual Property set up the Observatory on the Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights, whose main activity is to monitor the IPR enforcement situation in the country. The purpose of launching this information point was to create an interinstitutional communication platform in which to address and even resolve issues related to IPR enforcement, combining the efforts of AGEPI, Customs Service, Prosecutor General’s Office, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Competition Council, Agency for Consumer Protection and Market Surveillance and Agency for Courts Administration.
Thus, during the 10 years of activity of the Observatory, three national awareness-raising campaigns on the negative effects of counterfeiting and piracy were promoted, 10 national IPR enforcement reports were conducted, and national and international events were organized in order to increase respect for intellectual property.
In the context of the World Anti-Counterfeiting Day 2022, the Observatory launches a questionnaire on consumer perception of the phenomenon of counterfeiting in the Republic of Moldova. The questions are intended to inform respondents and generate concrete solutions to the problem of counterfeiting.
