The Global Innovation Index (GII), in its 9th edition, is conducted annually by the renowned International Business School INSEAD, American Cornell University in collaboration with WIPO, in order to improve the way the innovation process is measured and understood, promoting a broad vision on innovation applicable to developed and emerging economies alike.

The GII-2016 ranks the innovation performance of 128 countries and economies around the world, based on 82 indicators, grouped into 7 sets that relate to the quality of institutions, human capital, infrastructure, market complexity, business structure, technology production and creative production. Said edition is distinguished by the fact that explores the impact of innovation-oriented policies on economic growth and development.

The 2016 rankings is led by traditional innovative economies, among the top five being found Switzerland (1), Sweden (2), United Kingdom (3), USA (4) and Finland (5). Among the post-socialist states ranked above is Estonia (24) followed at some positions by the Czech Republic (27). According to the study, Moldova ranked 46 of 128 countries, gaining 38.40 points out of 100, followed by Croatia (47) and Romania (48).
