In the period 17-19 October 2016, within the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), was conducted the activity of the Standing Committee on the Law of Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications (SCT/36).
The 36 SCT meeting was opened by Francis Gurry, WIPO Director General, who noted that the subject on the development of the Treaty in the field of industrial designs (DLT) is a priority and will be included on the Agenda of the WIPO General Assembly in 2017.
During the sessions were discussed topics relating to the protection of graphical user interfaces (GUI), icons, typefaces/type fonts through legislation that refers to industrial designs, protection of names of states against registration and use as a trade mark, protection of geographical indications.
WIPO proposed using the Digital Access Service (DAS) for the secure exchange of priority documents that relate to industrial designs, trademarks between Intellectual Property Offices which participate in the system. The DAS is a safe digital alternative to the filing of certified paper copies of priority documents with multiple Intellectual Property Offices. The DAS is currently used by 11 national offices, including the WIPO International Office, for patent applications only (according to data on the date of 21 June 2016).
The event was attended by the representative of the Republic of Moldova, Simion Levitchi, Head of Trademarks and Industrial Design Department, State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI).
