International Olympiad in Intellectual Property for Lyceum Pupils

On September 1, 2014 will be kicked off the seventh edition of the International Olympiad in intellectual property for lyceum pupils. The purpose of the Olympiad is to increase the interest of the young generation in intellectual property, to identify gifted children, to support research and inventive activities of young people, to raise the status of the inventor, and to give talented children a chance to realize their potential, regardless of the country of residence or social status of the parents.

Olympiad organizers are: Federal Service on Intellectual Property (Rospatent), State Intellectual Property Academy of Russia (RGAIS), Chamber of Commerce of the Russian Federation (CCRF). The Olympiad is held with the support of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Eurasian Patent Office (EAPO), and Authors’ Society of the Russian Federation (RAO).

Based on a national contest of intellectual property in the Russian Federation for lyceum pupils with the assistance of Rospatent, in January-July 2009 RGAIS started a pilot project entitled “Inventiveness and Research Activity of Youth - Creation of a New Intellectual Elite in Russia”. Later, the project organizers decided to turn that competition in an Olympiad. In 2011, underpinned by Francis Gurry, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Olympiad received the status of international.

In the period when organizing the Olympiad, it was attended by pupils from foreign countries such as: Australia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Barbados, Belarus, Moldova, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Czech Republic, Tajikistan, etc. At last year’s edition of the Olympiad for the competition were registered more than 13,000 lyceum pupils.

In the Olympiad can take part children aged 14-18 years. The Olympiad is held in three rounds.

In Round I participants will take part in an open competition, by mail. Anyone who registers on the website gets a test, which must be passed before December 20, 2014 in online mode. The test will cover topics of general school disciplines, such as history, mathematics, natural sciences, Russian and English languages.

In Round II participants will write an essay on a topic proposed by the Organizing Committee. The topics and some recommendations on writing the essay will be posted on the website mentioned. Until March 1, 2015, participants in the Olympiad will send their works to the address of the Organizing Committee, which will draw the balance-sheet of stage II and will determine the finalists of the Olympiad.

Round III (final) will be held in Moscow in three stages: writing and oral defence of the essay (in Russian and English), a business game. In the final round of the Olympiad are provided various activities outside the competition: lessons, trainings, cultural programs, meetings with renowned experts in the field of intellectual property, roundtables.

Winners will be awarded certificates for studies at the State Intellectual Property Academy of the Russian Federation - the only university in Russia which trains specialists in this field.
