World Book and Copyright Day was first celebrated on April 23, 1996.
The idea of marking this day on April 23 was provided by Spain, where, in this day occurs the Rose Festival, an event that is celebrated in St. George (St Jordi) and is commemorated the author Miguel de Cervantes, along with William Shakespeare. On this day, in Spain, since the Middle Age, girls and women receive flowers, being a celebration of joy. After 1925 it became a habit as men to be offered a book in exchange for a lower. The custom is preserved today in Catalonia, where about half of the annual sales of books are made on this occasion.
